Know the Moment They Read It — Translate, an Unread View & Multi-Select on Mobile
September was about doing more in fewer steps. A heads-up the moment someone reads your email, one-tap translation for mail in other languages, a new Unread view, and multi-select with richer swipes on your phone — and hundreds of fixes and speed improvements across the board.
✨ Highlights
A heads-up when they read it (Desktop, iPhone & Android) — Turn on Settings → Supercharge → Read Receipts → Read receipt notifications, and Newton lets you know when someone starts reading an email you sent with read receipts, with one alert per reading session. It covers the emails you send after you turn it on, and you can switch it on or off for a single email from its Read Status tab.
Read mail in any language (Desktop, iPhone & Android) — When an email is written in a language other than yours, Newton offers to translate it with one tap. You can switch back to the original whenever you like.
Just the unread (Desktop, iPhone & Android) — A new Unread view sits right under Inbox and shows only the inbox mail you haven't read yet. A conversation drops out as soon as you read it.
The desktop app, in your language — Inbox, compose, settings, menus and notifications on desktop now appear in your computer's language, in the same sixteen languages as the phone apps.
Pick several at once (iPhone & Android) — Long-press an email and choose Select. You can then archive, delete, mark read or unread, or move everything you've picked at once, and a single Undo brings back the whole batch.
Three swipes per side (iPhone & Android) — Each swipe direction can now hold up to three actions. A short swipe shows them all, and a full swipe runs the one at the edge. To change them, drag them into order in Settings → Swipe actions, with a live preview.
Reply right in the conversation (Desktop) — Reply, Reply All and Forward now open at the bottom of the conversation instead of in a new window. You can pop the reply out into its own window, and if you leave the conversation, your draft is saved.
Google Calendar, next to your mail (Desktop) — To turn it on for a Gmail account, go to Settings → Accounts → Enable Calendar. Open the calendar from the toolbar to see your day, create events and RSVP.
A sound for every account (Mac, iPhone & Android) — For each account, you can turn new-mail notifications on or off and pick a sound: Hubble, Juno, Jupiter, Sputnik or Voyager. Your choice syncs across your devices.
Hit Send and move on (Desktop, iPhone & Android) — Compose closes the moment you press Send, and Newton finishes delivering in the background. Newton no longer says "Failed to send" when a slow mail server takes its time with an email that actually went out. That false error is how some replies ended up sent twice.
Heads Up
One email list style — The Modern list is gone. Every list now uses the Classic design, which shows each sender's initial in your account color instead of a photo. On mobile, date headings are gone, and you switch folders from the title at the top instead of swiping between pinned tabs.
Scheduled now lives in Sent (Desktop) — Scheduled has moved out of the sidebar. You'll now find it as a row at the top of Sent, the same as on mobile.
Some folders tucked under More (Desktop) — Promotions, Social, Spam and Trash now sit in a collapsed More section. Drag folders to reorder the sidebar or to move them in or out of More. Your order syncs to mobile.
New accounts start tidy — Gmail and Outlook accounts you add from now on start with Tidy Inbox switched on. Accounts you already have are unchanged. You can turn it off under Settings → Supercharge → Tidy Inbox.
Desktop
Improvements
Deep search for iCloud and friends — Searching an iCloud, Fastmail, Yahoo or similar mailbox now checks every folder on the server except Trash and Spam. Each account's results appear as soon as they're ready, and Newton tells you if an account couldn't be fully searched.
Snooze from the right-click menu — Every snooze option, including Pick date, instead of only "tomorrow".
One-click restore — Mail in Trash now has a Restore button where the delete button used to be. Restore is also in the right-click menu.
Empty folders with personality — The original Newton illustrations are back. If a list is empty because you're offline, an account needs signing in again, or something failed to load, Newton now tells you and offers a fix instead of cheering "Inbox Zero!".
A new Mac icon — It now matches the iPhone app.
Auto BCC, one address at a time — Add or remove addresses one by one, or paste several at once. Newton also catches typos and duplicates.
Fixes
Snoozed mail wakes on time — Snoozed emails now come back to your Inbox the moment their time is up, with no refresh needed.
Desktop odds and ends — The window drags from empty space in the top bar again. Sync resumes after you sign back in with Google or Microsoft, a failed send now shows an error in the composer, and Manage Templates opens Templates instead of Today. Settings switches now work with the keyboard and screen readers.
Mobile
Improvements
Write with AI on your phone — Tap the sparkle in the compose toolbar and describe what you want. Newton writes the draft or rewrites what's there, fills in an empty subject, and can undo its changes until you close the bar.
Tidy Inbox comes to your phone — Promotions, social mail and Outlook's "Other" mail now move to Low Priority on iPhone and Android too.
Long threads, folded — Messages you've already read fold behind one divider, and the conversation opens on the first one you haven't read, just like on desktop.
A menu for every message — Tap ••• on any message to reply to or forward that exact message, create a public link to it, save it as a PDF, print it, or share it as an .eml file.
Your scheduled mail, on your phone — A Scheduled row at the top of Sent lists everything waiting to go out. If a scheduled email fails to send, it now shows up there.
Snooze, matched to desktop — You get the same snooze choices as on desktop, plus Pick date. On iPhone, the choices now appear as a grid.
Arrange your toolbar — Choose which actions sit in the conversation toolbar and which go in its ••• menu under Settings → General → Quick actions → Thread actions. Desktop uses the same setting, so changes apply to both.
Side by side on tablets — On iPad and Android tablets, your mail list and the open conversation now sit side by side.
Search that explains itself — When an account can't be searched, search now tells you why (for example, you're offline or signed out) instead of showing "No results". Results are grouped into conversations, and Gmail results keep loading past the first fifty.
Compose, quicker — Reply puts your cursor in the message and Forward puts it in the To field. One tap removes the quoted message, and tapping an email address link in a message opens Newton's compose.
Check for updates — Find it in Settings to see if a newer Newton is available and get it.
A fresh coat — On iOS 26, conversation and compose controls now use Liquid Glass. On Android, compose, the sidebar and menus are redesigned, and the app icon now fills every launcher shape.
Fixes
Alerts that arrive on time — iPhone now shows new-mail notifications as soon as mail lands. Before, iOS sometimes held them until you opened Newton. On both phones, notifications no longer stop after an app update, and a burst of mail no longer adds a blank "New email" banner.
Notification buttons that work (Android) — Archive, mark as read and trash from a notification now work even when Newton is closed.
Opens on the new message — Tapping a notification now shows the new message first. If the connection drops, Newton retries on its own and tells you if it can't reach your mail.
Emails that wouldn't open — Conversations that got stuck on a blank screen or an endless spinner now load or offer Retry. If one email has broken formatting, only that message shows an error and the rest of the app keeps working.
App Lock survives updates — With App Lock on, updating Newton could reopen the app without asking for Face ID, fingerprint or your passcode. It now stays locked.
Your language, your clock — On iPhone, Newton stayed in English no matter your phone's language. It now follows your phone's language. On Android, Newton now follows the system 24-hour setting.
Back in sync sooner — iCloud, Yahoo and similar mailboxes could stop syncing for hours after Newton went to the background. Coming back online also didn't trigger a sync right away. Both now catch up at once.
Smoother touch on Android — Links work again after you swipe between conversations. Scrolling no longer selects text or opens a link by accident, and mail you bring back with Undo reappears in the list right away.
Drafts and threads behave — A reply draft stays reachable when someone writes back, and Reply stays available in a conversation that has a draft. Gmail draft edits now show up when you reopen the draft, and sent mail no longer appears in Archived.
No more missing logos — Logos that some senders, often banks, still load over an insecure connection now appear when images are on. The black flash between the launch screen and your inbox is gone.
Also New
Back to the Inbox — "Move to" now offers Inbox from Archived, Spam, Trash and labels.
Scheduled replies in context — A scheduled reply now waits at the bottom of its conversation, with Send now, Edit and Delete.
Better recipient suggestions — When you type a name, people you actually email come first, including people you've only ever sent to. On iPhone and Android, Newton can also suggest people from your phone's contacts if you allow it.
Tasks that lead back — Emails you send to Things 3 or Todoist now include a link back to that message in Newton. On iPhone, the ••• menu can send any message to Things 3.
Your AI assistant can tidy up — An AI assistant connected to Newton can now archive, move, star and mark mail as read, including in iCloud, Yahoo and similar mailboxes. It can't move anything to Trash or Spam.
Also Fixed
Attachments that come along — Forwards now include the original attachments and Cc line. Drafts with attachments over about 3 MB now save, and images in quoted messages no longer arrive broken.
Replies land in the right place — A reply sent from a saved draft could start a new conversation, especially on Outlook. It now stays in the thread. If the other person writes again after you saved a draft, Reply now starts a new reply. Saving a draft also no longer bumps an old conversation to the top.
Scheduled once, sent once — A scheduled email that took too long to send could be delivered more than once. Now it goes out only once. If Newton can't confirm a scheduled email was sent, it asks you to check your Sent folder instead of trying again. Scheduling an email with no subject works now too.
Outlook in any language — An Outlook mailbox set to a language other than English could show an empty Inbox or Sent folder, or archive mail to the wrong folder. Outlook drafts also showed a blank sender and stayed in Drafts after sending. All of this is fixed, and on desktop, drafts you start in Outlook itself now appear.
Unread counts that add up — Badges now count unread mail older than what Newton has downloaded.
Stars from iCloud — Mail you star in iCloud or Apple Mail now shows in Starred, as long as Newton has already downloaded it.
Aliases keep their names — Mail sent from an alias now uses that alias's name, and sync no longer resets alias names you've customized.
Tidy Inbox, tightened — You can now use "Move to Low Priority" with iCloud, Yahoo and similar mailboxes. Changing one account's Tidy settings no longer wipes another account's, and on desktop, changes apply right away.
Accounts & Sign-in
Setup that finishes — If you signed up but never connected a mailbox, Newton now picks setup back up instead of showing an empty inbox. Signing up on your phone no longer asks for an emailed code, and Google and Microsoft sign-in bring you straight back to the app.
Outgoing server settings (iPhone & Android) — When you add an iCloud, Fastmail or other mailbox on your phone, you can now set its outgoing server. That means mailboxes that send through a different server can send mail. Newton also no longer mixes up one service's incoming server with another's outgoing server.
Collaboration
Assign conversations — In a shared team mailbox, any teammate can assign a conversation to someone else or claim it with Assign to me (Shift+A on desktop). The new owner gets a notification. New Unassigned and Assigned to me views show what still needs an owner and what's yours.
Under the Hood
On your phone, opening the menu and switching folders no longer stalls, long inboxes scroll more smoothly on iPhone, and the app does less work when it starts. When sending, scheduled emails or notification taps run into trouble, Newton now recovers or tells you, instead of failing silently.
